Health Corner =    Eyes Wide Open

Eyes Wide Open

We tend to take our vision for granted, but seeing is a complex and amazing thing. The good people at the National Eye Institute (NEI) break it down clearly and simply to show us how our eyes work and what we can do to keep them healthy https://www.nei.nih.gov/health/healthyeyes/index.asp

The NEI wants you to know the steps you can take to protect your vision:

  • Get a dilated eye exam: This can detect problems early when they’re easier to treat
  • Know your family history: Many eye diseases are hereditary
  • Use protective eye wear: safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, and eye guards made of polycarbonate are 10 times stronger than other plastics
  • Wear sunglasses: choose sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays
  • Choose healthy habits: maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, managing chronic conditions, and a diet rich in dark leafy greens can help lower your risk of eye disease

Regular eye exams are important for everyone, even if you feel like your vision is fine, because some of the more serious age-related eye diseases—like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease—may have no warning signs or symptoms in their early stages. Glaucoma comes from increased fluid pressure inside the eye that damages the optic nerve. Glaucoma can slowly steal your peripheral vision and you may not notice it until it’s advanced. It can be treated with prescription eye drops, lasers or surgery. If not treated, however, it can lead to vision loss and blindness. The Glaucoma Research Foundation wants you to know more http://www.glaucoma.org/news/may-is-healthy-vision-month-keep-an-eye-on-your-vision.php

Over 100,000 adults and children suffer serious eye injuries every year while playing sports.  Almost all are preventable with the right equipment. Find the right eye protection for every sport http://www.nei.nih.gov/sports/findingprotection.asp

Did you know that eye makeup should be thrown away after three months to prevent infection? And, if you develop an eye infection, you should throw out your eye makeup immediately? Also, contact lens cases should be replaced at least every three months to prevent infection. The American Academy of Opthalmology also has some great tips on what to do in an eye emergency http://www.geteyesmart.org/eyesmart/living/eye-injuries-care-treatment.cfm You’ll learn that the bottom of a paper cup taped to the bones around the eye can serve as a protective shield until you get medical attention in the event of an eye cut or puncture.

You’ve seen a lot of life with those baby blues and there’s lots more to see. Take good care of your vision and you’ll always have a gleam in your eye!
